Basically i understand that it’s similar to the status update bit on Facebook

Imagine you were at a conference (WPC for example!) as you went into a session you could sends a twitter update to say “Watching Steve Balmers Keynote”
Then anyone else who is viewing your status knows exactly what your doing

That’s the only use i can think for it!

I was like that about Facebook until this weekend and when Susanne added me as a friend, I started to explore more. I then started to think this is rather cool! One good reason for joing the SBSC Group is that I'm really keen on getting feedback on the SBSC Programme, what's good or bad and what ideas we can come up with which I can take to Microsoft Corp and say "hey, a whole bunch of Partners want this to happen" rather than it being just my voice! So, getting your thinking cap on! I'm still not convinced about Twitter? I know what you mean.
